I believe Dahlia is meant to refer to a flower. I think they nicknamed the case the Black Dahlia case because the 'starlet' was a brunette vs. being the typical blonde bombshell of the day.

Burgundy and hunter green are colors that sound bad together, but actually work great, they're very rich and dark together, nice. I'm not sure about the chocolate though...where and how will that be used? Your bouquet sounds like it will look lovely.

Edit: thanks for the extra info. If you were thinking of switching up the color in your bouquet, how about incorporating the hunter green instead of the burgundy? It would get you away from the "christmas" type look, and pull out the girls dresses color. I carried in my bouquet accent flowers in the color of my girls dresses (soft yellow). Then I had accents of Ivy green on my centerpieces. Maybe you just have one too many accent colors? Skip the burgundy and stick with chocolate, hunter green, and ivory.

Reply:I'm a florist, and I've seen a lot of odd flower combos... but a dahlia is a very "eye demanding" flower... and they're very fragile... they will wilt and fall apart VERY easily... so you'll need to becarful with them. Their are other flowers that are 'big' that are eye catching, that aren't so 'eye demanding' and aren't Christmas... Calla Lilly's, roses, stargazers, Stephanus, bear grass, eucalyptus, alstromeria, heather all come in a wide variety of colors and they all came in many different sizes.... good luck!

For little "filler" flowers, why not try green hydrangeas?

How do I store my tubers so they won't get too dry or mold? They are Dinnerplate Dahlias.

Reply:The best way to store Dahlia tubers is like one would potatoes. The growers actually store them in dry peat moss. I would just put them in maybe a strawberry basket(for ventilation) in something dry like moss, shredded paper, or peat moss in a garage or shed that stays dry until time in your area for planting.

Dahlia problem.?

As a fair-weather gardener I have not been very active recently. And I have just found that the stems of a number of my dahlias have been cut (chewed presumably) near the tops of the plants. Are the culprits likely to be slugs/snails or black/green fly? (All are usually found in my garden about this time of the year.) If the pests are slugs/snails, why do they need to climb to near the tops of the plants when they could do their dirty deeds near the bottoms? Some of the leaves have also been chewed, but no caterpillars or butterflies have been spotted. Please advise. Thanks.

If they're slugs, you shuold be able to see a silvery trail left behind. Also, check at night with a flashlight, that will tell you for sure. You may also have leaf-miners as opposed to caterpillars. They appear on the inside tender part of the leaves where the females lay their eggs on the underneath of the leaves. Check for tiny black specks.

For slugs/snails you could put a collar-ring around the bottom of your flowers. Just cut them round out of cardboard, with a slit and hole cut in the middle, put on the stem near the ground. They can't climb up the plants. Diazon will control leaf miners - caterpillars too for that matter.

Snails and slugs will leave a lovely slime trail.

Grasshoppers also vigorously chew vegetation.
Reply:slugs do enjoy decaying leaves, but they also enjoy climbing up to find the tender leaves above. i spent countless nights hunting for them underneath the leaves of one of my vines which happened to be very precious to me because it is the larval host plant of a species of butterfly that i raise. if your problem is slugs, i suggest you hunt them too,...and spread a lime-barrier around your dahlia. they'll be safe from slugs.

Reply:Whatever's eating them is chewing at the top because that's where the most tender flesh is located. Down lower the stem is more tough and woody.

It could be a lot of things. Dig up one of them, put it in a pot and take it, along with one of the chewed off tops and take it to a good local nursery or to your local county extension agent. They'll have the best idea of the cause and the cure.

I live in zone 7 in Or and have raised dahlias for years, but it never hurts to ask what they like, especially since I have them with weedcloth around them, how much water do they need ? I hear they are from mexico originally so they must like the heat and little water ? Our Or coast grows them huge so ???

Reply:When you plant the bulb they love Bone Meal but so do skunks.

They love to be fed and I use Miracle Gro or the equivalent.

Very hardy and can withstand the hot sun....Lots of water once they get foliage.

I also give them a Bloom Booster.

I couldnt resist some deeply discounted bulbs at the nursery. I bought caladiums, dahlias, and cannas. I live in southern Florida. If I plant them now, will the dahlias and cannas grow and flower this summer? Its already in the upper 80's.

I have planted all but canna's, they bloomed in the mid to late summer for me, i live in CT. Dahlias will usually bloom until early fall.

I would describe him as either vicious or ruthless (or both). He was even worse in the book.
Reply:As I remember it the recently released Georgewas there to kill Aaron for a frame up Aaron sent him to prison for because George used to beat his wife who Aaron was having sex with and Bucky was also infatuated with. The truth came out when the money was found in Aaron's possession. The fact was that George was a criminal and a wife beater but Aaron was not innocent in this matter either, and probably neither was his wife. BTW, Aaron was no sweet heart himself as Bucky's missing teeth could attest to. So, I see George as a mixture of cruelty and outrage provoked....

The four books are all about the bad men who ran The Los Angles Police Dept in the 50's. They are great as police procedurals, wonderful poetic prose. The Black Dahlia is a true case:LA's longest unsolved murder case; the other three follow the basic same themes; 3 good/bad men up against a system that they are struggling to control but in which they increasingly become more and more mired. They are violent but not in a gratuitous manner; a rough kind of justice is served, but those who live by the sword in Ellroy's world die so.

I love unique names and if you look at the top baby names they have changed so much in the past 3 years, its not just emily and micheal now its Aiden Addison and Kaelyn.

The best Black Dahlia book I've ever read was called "Severed: The True Story of the Black Dahlia Murder" by John Gilmore, as far as not being able to witness the crime scene photos - almost all the books show them. It's inevitable. Shock factor. But most books keep them lumped together in the middle of the book, and if you really want to avoid them, you can skip the middle of the book, all the glossy pages, where the photos are, and just read the print.

It's a great noir, but I wouldn't say it was one of the best dramas ever made. It's been probably close to 25-30 years since I saw it, but Ladd and Lake were great.

If you're talking about the guy that killed the Dahlia (in the film), I think they were trying to say that he was the real father of Madeline. But I don't really know.

I have planted dahlia bulbs for the first time this year. I can't wait to plant more varieties next year! I live in northwest Wisconsin on Lake Superior.

Dig up the dahlia bulb with a shovel, be careful....with your hands, break off any new corms for next year...wrap in news paper...put each into brown paper bag...store in cool dark place..

Reply:Dahlias should not dry out completely , so store them in plastic bags with a few holes punched in them. Place an equal volume of vermiculite or peat moss in the bag to absorb the moisture given off by the roots. The acidity of the peat moss also tends to keep disease organisms to a minimum. The prepared bags should then be kept in a dry dark location at a temperature of 45-50 degrees

Remove as much soil as you can.. Do not damage the tubers . Cut the stems off a couple of inches away from the tuber... Dust with flowers of sulphur and keep dry.. Keep out of frost also.... A shed is fine... Some people hang them upside down. I used to keep them in trays of dry peat. In spring cover the tubers with a couple of inches of peat or compost, and water. When shoots appear they can be put into pots prior to planting out in April/May or you can take cuttings to increase your stock.
Reply:At the end of the growing season, tuber-grown dahlias should be dug and stored for the winter in a frost-free place. Immediately after the first frost and after leaves have blackened, cut the stem back to about six inches above the ground. Then use a fork to loosen the soil around the tuber and lift out of the soil. Remove surplus soil from the tuber.

Place the tubers upside down in a dry airy space for about two weeks. This allows moisture to drain out of stems. The tubers need to be completely dry before they are stored for the winter. Next store the tubers in trays of dry sand or peat moss in a cool, dry cellar or storage area at about 40 to 45 degrees F. Never store at a much higher temperature, as dahlia tubers will dry out and shrivel rapidly.

Another method of storing includes placing tubers in a heavy-grade, black plastic bag without additional packing material. Then seal the bag. This will prevent the tubers from dehydrating. Keep the tubers in a frost-free area. The danger exists, however, that they will sweat and rot.

Inspect the tubers every few weeks during the winter to check for disease or shriveling. Cut off any diseased parts and, if the tubers have shriveled, place them in a bucket of water overnight to plump them up. Allow them to dry thoroughly before returning them to storage.

Yes the best way to store the tubers is in a shed in a wooden tray with newspaper on the bottom (to soak up moisture), Cover any corms, tubers with a sprinkling of yellow sulphur (they sell this at garden centres) this prevents rot and also keeps nasty bugs at bay that might eat them!. Then plant out in Spring

Black Dahlia Murder was Insane, and the Red Chord, good as well.. Cannibal was my favorite part of the show though..if you are into this music at all and have an opinion on which of these bands is your favorite to listen to or see live, then give it.. the most descriptive will get the points they're after!

I actually found 2 of these at a plant sale last spring. I took one and gave one to my mom.

We are both in zone 8. Hers took off and she planted it in front of the house. Mine didn't do well and then the dog pulled it out of the pot. :( My mom's was doing really well until this winter - we've had a lot of frost. So, we'll see how it comes back.

It's not readily available in nurseries because it has a funny growth habit and doesn't look like much until it gets bigger.

Brian DePalma will be directing and it'll be a mix of fiction and true facts of the real story. Elizabeth Short was an aspiring actress that was found cut in half in a vacant lot in L. A. in 1947 - the murder was dubbed the Black Dahlia and went unsolved. It became the most notorious murder in California's history.

I'm looking forward to checking this out. It's rated R, so it might have some teeth. It's due in theatres Sept 15th. Starring Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson and Hillary Swank

So I just saw the Black Dahlia movie, and I have no idea what happened in the last 10 minutes of the plot. It was very hard to follow, and I don't understand why the rich snobby mother and that random dude savagly murdered Elizabeth Short. My husband and I are expecting our first child. We have chosen the first name of Dahlia, and our last name is Alexander. Therefore the child's name will be Dahlia (middle name) Alexander. I may have to re-dig/plant, as I planting them down in about 5.5-6 inches into soil %26amp; only about a foot spacing of 4 tuber [clumps] just now ..... should i replant them deeper,ect?

Noticed there's just a tad slight bit of clay in mostly top soil the area where I planted the dahlia's

I didn't like Josh Hartnett, then I saw The Black Dahlia and I think he's a good actor, but his other roles before Brian dePalma's film were worse than this. He plays the role of Bucky Bleichert very well, as a young cop that discovers Black Dahlia Murder's truth. I think he should accept better scripts, 'cause than he will became a better actor. The Black Dahlia is a great film, if it was in black and white, I'd think it is from the 40's. Camera movements, cinematography and the argument are also fantastic. Hillary Swank's very good playing the role of Madeleine. At the moment, I'm reading the original novel by James Ellroy and it's pretty good. If you like the film, you should read the book.

Reply:Who would have suspected that the murder of the Black Dahlia would be an subplot in this movie. Of course, it would have to be -- because there was no actual plot. Key characters are introduced mid-film, allegiances are so convoluted and under-developed that one is left confused over the emotions effused by the characters and really, what is up with Josh Hartnett's hair? It's like a buffed-up Marty McFly is playing the lead - however, Crispin Glover actually has acting talent.

The acting is all over the place and there are some great comedic scenes. Unfortunately, these scenes were meant to be dramatic - such as an open-robed clad Kay (Scarlett Johanssen) slamming the door as Marty McFly a.k.a Bucky (Hartnett) longingly gazes up at her.

The editing was dreadful - I don't think anyone knew which direction the movie was to take or which story-line was important. It seems that more concentration was put into over-developing the film-noir appearance of the movie (every time someone was driving in the car, it was raining -- really? it rains that much in L.A.) and dear God, the lazy saxophone soundtrack. Two hours of relentlessly contrived music playing in the background - it was so cliche.

In short, this is the worst movie I have ever seen. I am so disappointed. I love murder mysteries and film noir. This film is a sad attempt at both. Hilary Swank, who usually picks her projects well, must not have read the screenplay before accepting her role in this film.
Reply:I knew the origin of the true story it's based on which was on discovery the other week. I was totally lost when I watched the film as it didn't sem to folow at all and seemed to go on forever! stil like al things you have to make your own mind up!

Dahlia sounds like a flower and that name existed long ago (as in 50 years). Come up with something more upper class and your child will appreciate it. Dahlia sounds "black" sort of like "crystal" and "jasmine". I don't want to be racist, but that is pure fact right there.

Most tender bulbs are called summer bulbs, but there are several varieties that bloom in the fall. Tender bulbs are cold-sensitive and may not be able to survive the winter in areas of the U.S. other than the Southern coastal regions, the Southwest or coastal areas of California. Unless you live in these climates, you will need to plant tender bulbs in the spring after the ground has warmed up and dig them up in late fall for winter storage. Some tender bulb varieties are elephant's ear, caladium, gladiolus, canna and dahlia.
Reply:Absolutely not . . . toss them and start over . . . in some of the more northerly USDA regions, dahlia tubers won't even survive the winter planted DEEPLY in the soil. You should be able to tell that they have perished . . . they won't be heavy and have that fresh "heft" like they do when bought new. Once these tender tubers have frozen, they will not bloom again. Next time, place them in a bag in your basement, or in a more protected area that doesn't get so far below freezing (32 degrees F.)

The Black Dahlia

Elizabeth Short was born on July 29, 1924 in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. Little did she know that 22 years later she would be the victim of one of the most gruesome murders America has ever seen. Elizabeth Short, who was nicknamed the Black Dahlia, was sadistically murdered in 1947 in California. This case is one of the most publicized and talked about in history. Elizabeth Short was brutally tortured and killed by Arnold Smith, who then deposited her body in an abandoned lot in Los Angeles.

The Black Dahlia was born in Hyde Park, Massachusetts to her mother, Phoebe Mae, and her father, Cleo Short. She had four sisters. Her father, Cleo Short, abandoned his family in October of 1930. She spent her summers in Medford, Massachusetts and her winters in Florida. She had many nicknames such as “Bette”, “Betty”, or “Beth”, and the widely known, “Black Dahlia.” Her friends gave her the nickname in her teens because of her stark black hair, all black clothing and

the dahlias, large bright flowers, that she wore in her hair. When Short was nineteen she moved to Vallejo, California to live with her father. The two moved to Los Angeles in early 1943, but Short left almost immediately due to an argument with her father. She was arrested on more than one occasion for underage drinking and after the second time was sent back home to Medford. Short soon returned to California and visited her hometown in Massachusetts every few months.

Elizabeth was rumored to have possibly been a prostitute, or “woman of the night” as she dated many men, and had many admirers. Some believe that this led to her murder, that possibly an ex-boyfriend or someone she may have turned down became enraged and murdered the young woman. It was later proven in her autopsy that she was born with a genital defect, preventing her from having normal intercourse, disproving rumors of her being involved with prostitution, or sleeping with many men. One career Elizabeth did pursue was acting. She dreamt of being a celebrity and living a life in the spotlight. She frequented celebrity hotspots such as nightclubs, and bars. She was also rumored to have an alcohol addiction problem.

Elizabeth never lived in one place for more than a few weeks. She often stayed in hotels, apartment buildings, boarding homes and private homes. Past neighbors, and owners of the places where Short stayed said she often didn’t pay her rent, or got behind very quickly. The last place she was seen alive was the

Biltmore Hotel the night of January 9, 1947 .

Elizabeth Short was found dead in a vacant lot on Norton Avenue, nicknamed “Lovers Lane”, in Los Angeles on January 15, 1947. Her body was found by Betty Bersinger, who was taking her three year old daughter for a morning walk on her way to the cobbler. It wasn’t difficult to spot Short’s body, as it was placed less than five feet from the sidewalk. When police arrived at the scene they saw a most horrific sight. A young woman who had been severed in half at the third lumbar of her spine. Elizabeth Short had been bound and tortured before she was murdered. Marks on her upper thighs, wrists, ankles, and abdomen show that she was bound by either rope, wire, or possibly both. Short’s hair had been hennaed and it was wet at the time that her body was discovered, also, her entire body had been washed clean. She had three inch cuts from the corners of her mouth towards her ears on both sides of her face. There were three large lacerations just above her right eyebrow and there were multiple cuts across her face. Elizabeth had been beaten in the head and suffered a brain concussion as well. Her breasts had been close to completely mutilated, there were large cuts on her chest, abdomen and groin, and she had been slashed from her vagina to her rectum. A criss-cross pattern had been cut into the pubic area, and Short had been repeatedly sodomized both before and after death. She had a tattoo of a rose on her left thigh. The skin and muscle where

Short had the tattoo had been completely cut away from her body. This section of skin had been forced inside the rectal cavity, and grass and her own pubic

hair were forced inside her vagina. Several small shapes had been cut from her skin, and were found nearby by investigators. After a five hour long autopsy, the final causes of death were determined to be a brain concussion, and exsanguinations, or, bleeding to death, most often from hemorrhaging. The injuries to the head and face were the main sight of the hemorrhaging. It is likely that Short was alive to be tortured, and cut in half, only to die after bleeding to death. Most of these actions are classified as sexually sadistic and the suspect is thought to have possibly been a sex fiend who had tried to have his way with Elizabeth, but was refused by her.

The main suspects in the Black Dahlia case were Cecil French, Daniel Voorhees, and Jack Anderson Wilson, AKA Arnold Smith. Arnold Smith was a thin man, about 6 feet 4 inches tall, who walked with a limp and had a long rap sheet for robbery and sexual offenses. This man went by Arnold Smith, one of the aliases for Jack Wilson. Arnold Smith claimed that a man named Al Morrison confessed to him all the details of how he murdered the Black Dahlia. Arnold Smith said that Al Morrison confessed that he had taken Short to a room in a Hollywood hotel. Short had been surprised that he (Morrison) was planning to stay in the room too and refused the alcohol he offered. She was uninterested in a fling with him, so Morrison

took her to a house on East 31st Street, where they had a physical altercation. Morrison knocked her out and got a paring knife, large butcher knife, and some

clothesline. When Short revived and tried to escape, he stuffed her underpants into her mouth and tied her up. He proceeded to stab her numerous times until she

expired. Then he cut her in half in the bathtub to drain her body of blood. He washed everything clean, then took her out and placed her in the vacant lot. Not long after he gave this story to the police, Arnold Smith admitted that he, himself, was Al Morrison and confessed once again to the Black Dahlia murder. Smith could not be charged without hard evidence because of the possibility that he was just another confessing sam longing for fame. Hard evidence could not be found within the hotel room that was mentioned because the room burned down and any evidence that there might have been burned with it. To this day it is believed that Jack Anderson Wilson, or as he is called, Arnold Smith, murdered Elizabeth Short. He knew all the details of the murder to make the scene and story complete. ok we are watching silent hill the movie, first of all i am not asking for the differences in the game and the movie i know them all so all of you trying to answer that shut your faces. Relationship to the Video Games

Although it is not direct adaptation of any one of the games, the film does contain numerous overt and subtle connections to the series. Many of these are purely thematic or aesthetic similarities to the games' distinctive style, but there are also various features which appear to be direct translations of their in-game counterparts.

Characters

Jodelle Ferland as Alessa Gillespie.The police officer Cybil Bennett, from the original Silent Hill, appears in the film. She retains much of her same attitude from the game, but her ultimate fate is different. Her appearance is very similar as well, with her blue officer shirt and leather pants. The one noticeable difference is Cybil's haircut; it is much shorter in the film than it is in the game.

Christabella, Christopher Da Silva, and Thomas Gucci are original and do not appear in any of the games. For Christabella, a little girl of the same name did appear in the Silent Hill graphic novel, Dying Inside. Also, the way Christabella speaks mirrors that of Claudia Wolf from Silent Hill 3. As for Thomas Gucci, his name was taken from a memo that is found in the police station in the first Silent Hill game.

The Red Nurse is a clear take off of the character Lisa Garland from the first Silent Hill game. Their particular situations are also similar, as they are both caretakers of the bed ridden Alessa.

Rose Da Silva has been explained by director Christophe Gans as a female version of the Silent Hill video game protagonist, Harry Mason.

The young Alessa Gillespie and her mother Dahlia also appear in the film, though the relationship between them is quite different from the game. Originally in the game, Dahlia was the leader of the cult, not Christabella, and it is she who burns Alessa in hopes of invoking the child's dark powers and using them to birth a god. It should also be noted that the plot point involving Alessa splitting herself into two halves and hiding the good half by disguising it as a newborn child is better explained in the game as Alessa's way of trying to keep her mother from using the girl's powers for evil. When the game's protagonist brings the good half to Silent Hill, Alessa shrouds the town in thick fog in hopes of keeping Dahlia from finding her.

The cult in the game and film both share differing, but equally important roles. In the games, they are polytheistic diabolists known as The Order, while in the film, they are witch-burning Puritans. It should be pointed out that these two cults are possibly completely separate cults. The Order may very well be the focus of a possible sequel.

Creatures

Many of the creatures in the movie are also taken from the various games in the series, including the towering Red Pyramid (Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2), the ever-present Nurses (based on the Bubble-Head Nurses from Silent Hill 2), the grey children (child-demon Mumblers from Silent Hill), and the creeping Patient Demon (based on the same creature from Silent Hill 2). The Janitor, an original creation of director Christophe Gans is brought to life by special effects supervisor Paul Jones for the film. He has some similarities in appearance and ability to the Victim Ghosts from Silent Hill 4: The Room, but seems ultimately inspired by one of the scenes in the first game in which you find a body in one of the bathroom stalls while in the “Otherworld” version of the school. The body, however, does not come to life in game.

The Grey Children are called The Mumblers in game, and they appear in the first Silent Hill game. In the film, they are burning children who cry for help as they overwhelm Rose. In the games, they appear as child-like creatures that carry knives, but the image of children in the way they were represented in the film would not pass certification by the software ratings board, So, the game version are essentially "watered down". Aside from appearance, their roles are identical.

The Straitjacket Creature is called the Lying Figure or the Patient Demon in Silent Hill 2. The movie version is very similar to its video game counterpart.

The Janitor is an original creation by director Christophe Gans and FX artist Paul Jones. He is based off of a decorative corpse that is hanging similarly in the bathroom in the first Silent Hill game.

The Red Pyramid, known as The Red Pyramid Thing or Pyramid Head in game, appears in the second Silent Hill game. In the game, Pyramid Head is a manifestation of the protagonist's guilt, while in the film he is a punisher commanded by Alessa. Appearance wise, they are very similar in film and in game. On film, his helmet is sharper and more detailed and his posture is more upright and powerful, while in game he has a slouched posture and his helmet is rusted and bloody. They share the character's trademark brutality and ominous appearance.

The Nurses on film and in game are nearly identical in appearance and action (although their general appearance recalls the nurses from the first and second games).

Scenes and Themes

Three scenes from the beginning of the first Silent Hill have been recreated nearly shot-for-shot.

The first features Rose and Sharon driving towards Silent Hill, only to crash after swerving to avoid a ghostly figure in the road.

The second shows Rose walking down an L-shaped alley, minutes before the third scene.

The third is where Rose is ambushed by the Gray Children after discovering a mutilated body crucified on a chain-link fence.

At least one scene was also taken from Silent Hill 2. When Rose enters Room 111 she finds a hole in the wall leading to another building, where she must jump across to access. This was taken directly from the game.

When Christopher receives calls from Rose but only gets white noise, this calls to mind the scene in Silent Hill 2 in which James first discovers the radio and hears a voice that sounds vaguely like his wife's. The same thing happens to the protagonist in Silent Hill 4: The Room when he first tries to use the phone in his ghost-infested apartment.

When Rose views the paintings at Midwich listing the school's values, the last picture says "God", and the figure depicted is female. This is a possible reference to "Silent Hill 3".

Some dialogue from the film mirrors the games. When Rose meets Dark Alessa face to face for the first time, she says, "You could be her twin". James says something similar when he first meets Maria (who bears striking similarities to his wife) in Silent Hill 2.

When Rose sees the Red Pyramid stabbing through the door, she says, "It's Him!" This is exactly what the protagonist says in Silent Hill 2 when he sees a painting depicting The Red Pyramid in the town's historical society. It is also shouted by Cynthia over the intercom in the subway station in Silent Hill 4.

The town itself has been recreated with a striking attention to detail, right down to the names of many of the town's shops. As a result, the street scenes are almost indistinguishable from those of Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. The memorable Midwich Elementary School from Silent Hill also appears, along with Brookhaven Hospital (from Silent Hill 2 and 3). When Rose wakes up after the Grey Children attack, she wakes up in a bowling alley that is very similar to Pete's Bowl-a-Rama from Silent Hill 2.

The concept of internal guilt, self-righteous murderers and the overall idea of “private hell” is taken directly from the second game while the themes of loss and loneliness echo that of the first Silent Hill game.

When Rose and Sharon are driving to Silent Hill, a song called "Letter from the Lost Days" plays on the radio, very similar to the scene where Douglas drives Heather to Silent Hill in the third game.

In the hotel, Rose grabs a knife from Anna. The same knife is given to the protagonist by a supporting character in Silent Hill 2. In the film the knife is used to cut open a painting. After using the knife Rose drops it.

The way bed ridden Alessa looks mirrors the final boss from Silent Hill 2.

The film also shares some visual symbolism from the games.

The persistant mentions and visions of fire suggest Alessa's burning and suffering.

The images of wheelchairs (in the alley and in the hospital) are suggestive of Alessa's hoptilization and death in the town.

The symbolism of fans, an infinite loop representing Alessa's constant death and rebirth (Alessa -%26gt; Sharon -%26gt; Dark Alessa -%26gt; Sharon), can be seen throughout the film much like games. Fans are seen in the alleyway at the beginning of the film, outside of the school when the Red Pyramid makes his first appearance, and in the room where the Red Pyramid makes his first attack.

Trivia

In the original script, there were only female characters. After submitting the script, it was returned to Gans with a memo saying “there are no men!”. When Sean Bean was added to the cast, the script was approved.

Silent Hill uses little computer-generated imagery, with the most notable exceptions being the fog that drenches the town, the otherworld transitions, and the insects that surround the Red Pyramid. Some of the creatures have been touched-up with CGI in post-production, but, for the most part, what is seen on film existed physically. Most of the creatures were professional actors or dancers covered in latex and makeup.

Screenwriter Roger Avary has said in interviews that as a boy, his father, who is a mining engineer, used to tell him stories about the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, where coal deposits from the local mine caught fire and caused toxic gasses to force the inhabitants to evacuate forever. Avary, it seems, was fascinated since childhood by the idea that fires underneath the town would be burning for a hundred years and the story of Centralia was used as the basis for the township of Silent Hill.

Parts of Silent Hill were shot in downtown Brantford, Ontario. These include most of the street shots where Rose wanders and tries to follow Alessa throughout the town, the scenes where Rose looks at the bus maps on the poles for direction, the driving scene with Christopher and Gucci drive through Silent Hill, the entire scene where Christopher breaks into Braham's hall of records (the red "Expo" on the front of the building is the sign for the Brantford Expositor building) and the exterior of the Grand Hotel (which is actually the rear of the Expositor building).

Although the film is supposed to be occurring in West Virginia, during two different occasions, (both while at the gas station in the town of Brahams), you can clearly see the price of the gasoline listed for sale per liter, not the US standard of per gallon (similar to how the speed limit signs in Silent Hill 2 are in km/h instead of MPH), perhaps in reference to the games' often ropey recreation of the small-town America. The mechanic and cashier at Smitty's gas station have noticeably different accents than the characters from Brahams (Sister Margaret, Gucci, Cybil).

The animated end titles are similar to the titles used in the video game series.

The imagery of the creatures were influenced by artists Alberto Giacometti, Francis Bacon, and Hans Bellmer.

One of the films seen listed on the theater's marquee in Silent Hill as Thomas and Chris drive by is The Omega Man, from 1971. The movie has a man survive a biological weapon attack that killed many and left a few hundred deformed, nocturnal people calling themselves “The Family”. The plague has caused them to become sensitive to light, as well as homicidally psychotic. They believed science and technology to be the cause of the war and their punishment, and Neville, as the last symbol of science, the old world, and a “user of the wheel”, must die — a clear allusion to the atmosphere of Silent Hill.

Konami Japan and Team Silent, the development team responsible for the Silent Hill game series, were directly involved with the production of this movie from the pre-production stage all the way to the post-production stage.

Approximately 100 different copies of Rose's outfit were made for the film, with soft colors fading into greys and then blood-reds as the film progressed.

It took Christophe Gans five years to obtain the movie rights to Silent Hill from Konami. He sent in a video interview to Konami explaining how much Silent Hill meant to him and he sent scenes that he apparently filmed on his own dollar with music from the Silent Hill games.

Christophe Gans has stated that the film is an adaptation of the first game, with the emotional melancholy of the second, mixed with the dialogue delivery of the third, with some camera movement inspired by the fourth.

In the scene where the miners are trying to kick in the door to the bathroom, the camera pans up the door, over the top and down the other side of the door to the miners. This was done all in one shot, where the left half of the wall was shifted into place after the camera went over the top of the door. This can be seen on the Origins segment of the DVD documentary.

Connections with folklore

The setting of the film is Toluca County, West Virginia, but there is no such county in that state. In the second game in the series, there is a Toluca Lake adjacent to Silent Hill. There is a real lake called Toluca Lake in California. There is also a Toluca, Illinois.

The series of games have multiple references to a cult which closely follows descriptions found in the Cthulhu Mythos given by H.P. Lovecraft. These references were largely absent from the film, as the fundamentalist sect portrayed there was much more an echo of puritanical Christianity, interested in burning witches to destroy sin, rather than raising old gods.

Dimensions of Silent Hill

In the movie, there are three different dimensions or versions to the town of Silent Hill.

The first world is modern day Silent Hill. This world is the version where Christopher and Gucci are in. This is also shown with Silent Hill 30-years prior to the current events in the film. This was showcased in Dark Alessa's montage scene.

The second world of Silent Hill is filled with fog and falling ashes. This is the main dimension that Rose, Cybil, Sharon, and Alessa are trapped in. This version is a sort of purgatory or limbo.

The third world of Silent Hill is covered in Alessa's Darkness. This is the hellish one that's covered in rust and stained in blood.

Notes

All three worlds seem to be impermeable to the other's realities, that is to say, the creatures that lurk in the dark realm disappear when the fog-filled realm reappears and the damage the Red Pyramid causes in one world repairs itself in another. However, there is evidence that events in one world will affect the others. For instance, Rose calls her husband to tell him that she is not doing well and he receives parts of the message. Also when Christopher is aware of his wife's presence and claims he can smell her perfume. In addition, when Rose opens a door, the same door moves in Chris' reality.

When Dahlia and the other cult members found out about her powers they decided that Alessa would be the perfect vessel for the God. It is speculated that Dahlia is Alessa's birth mother and that Dr. Kauffman is the biological father. Alessa, who was troubled by many psychological problems, refused to take part in the cult’s activities. In order to hasten the birth of the God, Dahlia burned down her house with Alessa inside. Alessa would then split her soul in half and create a new baby. This baby would be found by Harry Mason and his wife. She would be named Cheryl Mason. Alessa would spend the next seven years in a coma suffering in a hellish nightmare, which ultimately becomes the basis of the darkness that Alessa spreads in Silent Hill. Upon Cheryl’s return to Silent Hill, Alessa would send out her soul. After Harry crashes, the souls of Cheryl and Alessa merge. At the final battle, the physical Alessa, clad in the robes of Valtiel, and the Soul of Alessa are merged and form the Holy Woman in White aka Incubator aka Mother of God. When Dr. Kaufmann throws a bottle of Aglaophotis on the Mother of God she prematurely expels the demon known as Incubus aka the Demon God Samael. Harry is then able to defeat the prematurely expelled and thus weakened Incubus. After the battle the Holy Woman in White reappears. She gives Harry a baby with the complete soul of Alessa and Cheryl, which in a way is the Holy Woman in White herself reborn.

I asked this same question recently, and I gave a list of books that have different men named as the killer. Jack A. Wilson, aka Arnold Smith, is said to be involved by two different authors. Steve Hodel said his father did it, and Janice Knowlton said her father did it. One author said gangster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel did it and Jack Wison helped to carry the body to and from a car that took it to the vacant lot on Norton between 39th and Coliseum January 15, 1947. Psychics are frauds, so I do not acept anything they say. Ed Burns is not as well-proven as other suspects. We shall never know for certain, I go for Jack Anderson Wilson who had several aliases.

I think these two movies showcased the lack of quality in acting today. The popular actors are incapable of pulling of the Film Noir style. I was hoping for LA Confidential but these movies were horrible.

I saw it years ago, so I'm sketchy about the details. As I recall, a young artist "meets" a woman long-distance (through the internet?). They talk often on the telephone, planning a future visit when she will come and meet him in person. She tells him she wants him to paint a picture of her based on a photograph she sends him. After he paints the picture, she persuades him to alter it, making the subject appear to have been cut in two. Afterward, the woman in the photograph is found murdered, posed exactly like the painting--so naturally the artist becomes the prime suspect. The film was probably made in the 1990s.

* A 1975 TV movie about the case, Who Is the Black Dahlia by Robert Lenski and starring Lucie Arnaz is a highly fictionalized version of the murder. Many details were changed because several people, including Short's mother and Red Manley, who brought Short from San Diego to Los Angeles, refused to sign releases for the studio.

* A 1988 episode of the TV detective thriller Hunter depicts Rick Hunter and Dee Dee McCall discovering a case similar to the Black Dahlia murder when a skeleton that has been cut in half is found during demolition of a building constructed in 1947. Hunter and McCall are joined by a retired detective who worked on the Elizabeth Short case. The murderer in the recent case turns out to be Short's murderer as well. (A disclaimer at the end of the episode explains that the Black Dahlia case remains open and unsolved on the books of the Los Angeles Police Department.)

As well, there is a film in pipeline based on the case. Neo-noir author James Ellroy based his 1987 book, The Black Dahlia on the crime. A film by Brian De Palma, based on the Ellroy novel, began production in Bulgaria in May 2005. Also titled The Black Dahlia, the movie will star Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank, and Mia Kirshner as Elizabeth Short, and is planned for release in September 2006.

just a thought of mine, it looks like the artist was not really communicating with Black Dahlia (Elizabeth Short). 1947 would be in the satge of penpals - witing letters by post mail. it is very common in the net these days but also it could have been possibly very much done in the old times to use someones name or personallity in creating long distance relationships - make believe relationships can be done easily when you don't really see the real person. I read it because I had read his 'L.A. Confidential' and seen the movie (great book, great movie - killer cast). Since I had liked that one so much, I bought 'The Black Dahlia'.

What exactly is in the "newer version"? I checked Amazon, and there's no mention of anything other than a new afterward by Ellroy. It's a great book--got me hooked on Ellroy, and I don't read much in the way of crime/mystery fiction.

I live in Zone 6-5 and take my Dahlia tubers out every fall. They are stored in a paper bag in the dark cellar and put in the garden after the danger of frost is gone.

One year, I used bone meal when I bedded them. Big mistake! Some grubbing animal (raccoon? possum? squirrel? skunk?) dug them all up. What a mess they made, too.

Fortunately my neighbor had hundreds and was able to provide me with more.
Reply:Need more info as to what zone you live in or what state. Depending on your location, you would transplant differently. If you are in the Northeast you would need to remove it around the first mild frost.

I remember the actual case. Both fascinating and heartbreaking.

The film does have some deviations from the truth:

lesbianism, porn, sex for money, and the reporters

1. Elizabeth Short (she did not have a middle name..another deviation) was not a whore, or doing porn or engaging in lesbianism.

2. The reporters had already taken photos of the body ...and sent them into their editors ...before the scene was declared off limits. So much for the police trying to hide the fact her body was mutilated (it was a different world then .. the media did not thrive on human sorrow).

Reply:I haven't decided. I've read three books about Elizabeth Short, aka "The Black Dahlia". Two people claim their fathers killed Liz. The third book is a James Elroy novel, and the movie is derived from it. Elroy's mother was killed somewhat like Liz, so he became fascinated by Liz. The movie gets mixed reviews, but it sounds as if it focuses all too much upon two fictional cops in the novel and has too little about Liz who should be the center of attention. Personlly, I don't like Elroy's book or his characters.

The Black Dahlia Movie Synopsis: A fictionalized tale of obsession, love, corruption, greed and depravity set around the true story of the brutal murder of a fledgling Hollywood starlet that shocked and fascinated the nation in 1947 and remains unsolved today.

The poster is very dramatic and depicts a seemingly dead, pale beauty with a trickle of blood coming out of the side of her mouth. She has a live flower in her hair, her eyes are open and her skin is flawless although she looks more like a manequin than a dead body, set against a black backdrop. The poster is effective in getting attention and the subject gives the viewer a feeeling of dead calm which is eerie and inspires interest in the story.

Reply:I have seen 3 different posters. In the one looking to the side, the lipstick shows where the cut is going to go. I the other she is dead and blood is running from her mouth and the other shows the whole cast over the Title. I have not seen the movie but the posters suggest it happened a long time ago. They are using a film noir technique AND perhaps this woman did something with her mouth that incured the wrath of a murder. It does not look like murder by stranger because her mouth distortion looks like someone hated her.

It was a movie and guess what? The lady who was murdered lived in an apartment in a town called Medford Massachusetts and i lived 2 floors above the place she lived in but she wasn't living there at the time i was born, i wasn't even alive, she wasn't murdered in that house, she moved to L.A. to be an actor and she was murdered there, its so freaky to talk about. I found out a bout 2 weeks ago by my mother, i had never knew at the time, i live in Malibu now so its kind of werid.

Hilary Swank's mother was the one who killed the girl. Her husband and that gardener guy were making dirty movies with the girl in that run down house. The mother found out about it and did the killing.

The James Ellroy book is the only one I've read, and I don't think I'd use it as a reference. I really enjoy reading his books but realistically they are all the same story retold, many times even with the same names.

Yes - to both questions.

They only used part of the book for the film.

I thought it was a real visual feast - every frame was gorgeous.

However, the plot was confusing - and not very interesting (very little of the film is about the murder of The Black Dahlia).

And, frankly, I'm ready for Scarlett Johansen's 15 minutes to be up - she's in EVERYTHING. It was impossible to believe her character - she's just too recognizable.

In fairness - Hillary Swank and Fiona Shaw were terrific - I think Shaw will get an Oscar nod.

I also noticed that after the flower fades there is a round ball like pod or something...It is confusing because it almost looks like it is a flower about to open...The plants are full of these now and no flowers.Are these seed pods that need to be cut off so the plant will keep flowering?or are these indeed new flower heads about to open???

I dont know why I have never noticed this perennial shrub much before.

Can anyone tell me how long they usually bloom for, which colors they have,do they have them in evergreen, how much sun, soil, etc?

Looking for a nice short hedge type of flowering shrub that would bloom from late Spring till Frost, if possible that would do well in Zone 6.

I'm in zone 6 and Dahlias are flowers...not shrubs. They are not hardy here and in order to have them again the next year you would have to dig up the plant and over winter it in your garage or in the basement. They are awesome flowers tho and the blooms are probably unbeatable in size and color.

A long blooming shrub for zone 6 would be a variety of Spirea. Goldmound.....Little Princess....Gold Flame..there are many varieties to consider. The best part of these shrubs are you can prune them back and each time they will shower you with another spectacular array of blooms! They will require a bit of maintenance...but not an overwhelming amount.

Reply:The Dahlia I know is not a shrub, but a tuber plant that if not careful can rot in the winter months. They do come in many different colors and sizes.

As far as finding a shrub that flowers from spring till frost is going to be tough. One of the longest flowers shrubs that I know of is a plant I know of as an Abise Bush. I am not sure if that is the proper name. Talk to our local landscaper or nursery.

Reply:The police ran out of clues except for one very important detail; the killer (or killers) kept her purse and it's contents.

This could be considered an act of trophy collecting. This in turn would suggest a serial killer. Perhaps someone who has killed after Elizabeth's murder but refined the method and displaying of the body?

I personally think the strongest evidence points to someone who had a lot of time and privacy. They would have needed the facilities to cut her in half and deal with the resulting blood and viscera. Perhaps a mortuary worker? Someone who knew how to torture and then had the time and leisure to dump the body and tease the police later on.

Random killers don't usually keep anything that would tie them to their crime. This person(s) took time and pleasure in killing Elizabeth and kept her belongings as a reminder.

The movie was made from the Ellroy book which was a complete work of fiction BTW.

We will never know who killed her now. Not unless someone finds the missing items and can produce blood stains for DNA work.

A true mystery and a classic piece of Hollywood gore-lore.

I read the book by Steve Hodel about a year ago and was wondering what other people thought of it. The evidence in favor of George Hodel was pretty compelling and although it wasn't quite the smoking gun I was expecting, I am farily convinced that he was the killer. What are your thoughts?

I think his theory as to the identity of the Black Dahlia butcher is a valid possibility...but there are just too many loose ends, too many suppositions on his part to make me completely comfortable with his conclusions.

Hodel makes a compelling case. But I doubt if any court of law would base a verdict on the evidence he offers.

It's a grotesquely fascinating case, isn't it? If insanity isn't the motivation for the murder...sorry, it's too early in the day for me to think about it!

George Hodel - they did a whole show on American Justice about him - you might can google and find out all the info - it seems to me he is the killer although there have been many suspects.

Back in the day, the police department there could be paid off easily. I'ts funny they had evidence against him, including tapped phone conversations, but he moved away, and one cop dropped the case against him - Very interesting story

Reply:It was apparently a surgeon who was having an affair with her. The surgeon's son became a detective on the Los Angeles Police Department and came upon the crime's details in the cold case files. He's retired from the force and wrote a book about it.
Reply:I think that technology wasn't as advanced as it is now. Even now it would be hard to find out who killed her. Finger prints and other clues could be lost because of the amount of time that has passed. For example, if you wanted to take a finger print now, the oils that someone left when they touched the victim or her belongings could have dissappeared, leaving no chance to get a print. Besides, people clammed up when she was murdered. Matthew Gordon's family, her fiance's family, distanced themselves from the murder. Plus it didn't make things easier when people falsely confessed to the crime.

Saw it and was totally disappointed, as the book on which it's based is one of my favorites. Whoever told Josh Hartnett he could act was either lying or on drugs: he's an ultra-light piece of fluff with no ability to deliver a line that rings true. Brian DePalma, the director, gave us not a "noir" thriller; it's more of a "blanc". Skip it, and read the book by James Ellroy instead.
Reply:Well let me give you my version of the movie. The ending pissed me off! I saw the original classic of the Black Dahlia several times, and this film will only copy from the original story with new stars; new glamour possibly a new setting. But the story is the same. But go check it out for yourself because I've noticed that when people go to the movies and see the same film, different people view the film differently as far as their opinion of the film.

It is one of the most notorious unsolved mysteries.

Upon the release of the murder in the press, several men and women admitted to the crime. But the police could not validate anyone's story. The case, notoriously, attracted several false confessions.

To date, according to the LAPD, the case goes unsolved. Though Janice Knowlton has authored a book naming her father as the killer, police have not reported Ms. Knowlton's statements or information as holding any water at all.

What is the best way to store Dahlia Tubors over the winter months?

I leave about three inches of old stalk attached to the tubers and lay them down in an empty seed tray and cover them loosely with compost / soil. I then keep them in an unheated greenhouse in the dry.

By spring time they will have started to show signs of life with tiny new growth. As soon as these become established and the weather has warmed up a little, (in the UK by the end of May), then they are ready to plant out.

We just cut ours down the other day and covered them with about a foot of leaves and a tarp. Here in Wa. we don't get real cold winters but it is most often wet. We stored them in a box of wood shavings last year and the results were less than ideal. Maybe we didn't clean them good enough but some of them molded. I had them in a dry storage shed. This year we are trying "leave them in the ground".
Reply:It gets very cold where I am in northern VT. My mother-in-law has lived here (with Dahlias in her garden) for 14 years. They have to be dug up each fall (we dug ours up a couple of weeks ago), and stored in a paper bag or cardboard box in the basement. She has never had a problem with them coming back after re-planting them in the spring. Darn things spread so much that every fall she splits the tubes and give half of them away.

Reply:We store ours in peat moss ,from time to time give the peat moss a mist with water to keep it damp in order to prevent the tubers from drying out. Just like when you buy the tubers from the store ! same idea except in cardboard boxes .

Reply:You can lift them, let them dry a day and then pack them in paper bags with slightly damp peat. But I have found them to be fussy, so I leave them in the ground on my south-facing slope. We are in zone 7 and they make it as long as I put mulch on them.

It was a gruesome murder and the movie shed absolutely no light on it...not to mention the fact that they had the facts wrong about her. She was not a lesbian and was not sexually active.

Elizabeth Short, better known as the Black Dahlia, was the victim of an infamous murder in 1947. She was born July 29, 1924 and died January 15, 1947.

Born in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, Short was raised in Medford by her mother, Phoebe Mae. Her father, Cleo, abandoned her and her four sisters in October, 1930.

Troubled by asthma, she spent summers in Medford and winters in Florida. At the age of 19, she went to Vallejo, California to live with her father, and they moved to Los Angeles in early 1943. She left almost immediately because of an argument with her father and got a job in one of the post exchanges at Camp Cooke, which is now Vandenberg Air Force Base, near Lompoc. She moved to Santa Barbara, where she was arrested September 23, 1943, for underage drinking and was sent back to Medford by juvenile authorities.

For the next few years she resided in various cities in Florida, with occasional trips back to Massachusetts, earning money mostly as a waitress.

In Florida she met Maj. Matthew M. Gordon Jr., who was part of the 2nd Air Commandos and training for deployment in the China Burma India theater of operations. Short told friends that Gordon -- who according to his obituary in the Pueblo, Colo., newspaper, was awarded a Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, the Air Medal with 15 oak leaf clusters, and Purple Heart -- wrote a letter from India proposing marriage while recovering from an airplane crash he suffered while trying to rescue a downed flier. She accepted his proposal, but he died in a crash on August 10, 1945, before he could return to the U.S. to marry her. Short later embellished this story to say that they were married and had a child that had died. Although Gordon's friends in the air commandos confirm Gordon and Short were engaged, his family subsequently denied any connection once Short was murdered.

She returned to Southern California in July 1946, to see an old boyfriend she met in Florida during the war, Lt. Gordon Fickling, who was stationed in Long Beach. For the six months that remained of her life, she stayed in Southern California, mainly in the Los Angeles area. During this time, she lived in at least a dozen hotels, apartment buildings, rooming houses, and private homes, never staying anywhere for more than a few weeks.

Short was last seen on the evening of January 9, 1947, in the lobby of the Biltmore Hotel at 5th Street and Olive in downtown Los Angeles. She was 22 years old.

Los Angeles County district attorney investigators' reports state the nickname was invented by newspaper reporters covering the murder. In either case, Short was not generally known as the "Black Dahlia" in life.

Many crime books and other allegedly factual accounts of the case, including a few newspaper stories appearing shortly after the murder, claim that Short lived in or visited Los Angeles at various times in the mid-1940s; but these claims have never been substantiated, and are refuted by the findings of the law enforcement officers who investigated the case. A document in the Los Angeles County district attorney's files titled "Movements of Elizabeth Short Prior to June 1, 1946" states that Short was in Florida and Massachusetts from September 1943 through the early months of 1946, and gives a detailed account of her living and working arrangements during this period.

Although popular myth as well as many "true crime" books portray Short as a call girl, a report by the district attorney's office for the Los Angeles County Grand Jury states that she was not a prostitute.

This unsolved murder has been viewed as emblematic of the perception of Los Angeles as a dystopia.

The Black Dahlia murder investigation by the LAPD was the largest since the murder of Marian Parker in 1927, and involved hundreds of officers borrowed from other law enforcement agencies. Because of the complexity of the case, the original investigators treated every person who knew Elizabeth Short as a suspect who had to be eliminated. Hundreds of people were considered suspects and thousands were interviewed by police. Sensational and sometimes inaccurate press coverage, as well as the horrible nature of the crime, focused intense public attention on the case. About 60 people confessed to the murder, mostly men, as well as a few women. As the case continues to command public attention, many people are suggested as the possible killer of Elizabeth Short, much like the Jack the Ripper case.

Walter Bayley: Dr. Walter Alonzo Bayley was a Los Angeles surgeon who lived in a house one block south of the vacant lot in which Elizabeth Short’s body was found, until leaving his wife in October 1946. At the time of the murder, Bayley’s estranged wife still lived in the home. Bayley's daughter was a friend of Elizabeth Short's sister Virginia and brother-in-law Adrian, and had been the matron of honor at their wedding. When Bayley died in January 1948, his autopsy showed that he was suffering from degenerative brain disease. After his death, Bayley's widow alleged that his mistress knew a "terrible secret" about Bayley and claimed this was the reason the mistress was the main beneficiary upon his death. Bayley was never a suspect in the case, but many medical doctors and others with medical training were. In secret testimony, Detective Harry Hansen, one of the original investigators, told the 1949 Los Angeles County Grand Jury that in his opinion, the killer was a "top medical man" and "a fine surgeon." Bayley was 67 years old at the time of the murder, had no known history of violence or criminal activity of any kind, and is not known to have met Short.

When Larry Harnisch, a copy editor and writer for the Los Angeles Times, began studying the case in 1996, he eventually concluded that Bayley could be Elizabeth Short's killer.[2] Although critics of Harnisch's theory question whether Bayley's mental and physical condition at the time of the murder would have been consistent with the commission of this type of crime, the original investigators' theory that the body was cut in half because the killer wasn't strong enough to move it intact partially answers this objection. Harnisch theorizes that Bayley’s neurological deterioration contributed to his alleged violence against Short. Some have suggested that the secret that Bayley’s mistress was blackmailing him with was that he had performed abortions, then a crime. However, there is no evidence that Bayley performed abortions or associated with anyone involved in performing abortions. Author James Ellroy endorsed Harnisch's theory in the film "James Ellroy's Feast of Death".[3]

Norman Chandler: Chandler, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, is accused of involvement in Elizabeth Short's murder, in Donald Wolfe's The Mob, the Mogul, and the Murder That Transfixed Los Angeles. In a complicated scenario involving multiple perpetrators, Wolfe claims that Chandler impregnated Short while she was working as a call girl for the notorious Hollywood "madam" Brenda Allen, which led to Short's murder at the hands of gangster Bugsy Siegel. Wolfe's claim that Short was a prostitute is at odds with the Los Angeles County district attorney's files, which plainly state that she was not. [4]

Joseph A. Dumais: Joseph Dumais, a 29-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, confessed to the murder a few weeks after it occurred. Although this "breakthrough" was quickly dismissed by the original investigators, the Los Angeles press covered enthusiastically until it was revealed that Dumais had remained in Fort Dix at the time of the murder. Dumais was cleared of any involvement in the crime, although he continued to claim he killed Elizabeth Short each time he was arrested for various offenses, well into the 1950s.

Woody Guthrie: The folksinger was one of the many suspects in the murder, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's files and Ramblin' Man: The Life and Times of Woody Guthrie written by Ed Cray and published in 2004 by W.W. Norton, Page 331. According to Cray, Guthrie drew police attention due to some sexually explicit letters and lurid tabloid clippings he sent to a northern California woman with whom he was smitten. The mailings disturbed their recipient so much that she showed them to her sister in Los Angeles, who contacted the police. Guthrie was quickly cleared of involvement in the murder, but various authorities attempted to prosecute him, with minor success, on charges related to sending prohibited materials through the mails.

George Hodel : Dr. George Hodel came under police scrutiny in October 1949, when his 14-year-old daughter, Tamar, accused him of molesting her. Hodel was tried and acquitted of these charges in December 1949. The molestation case led the LAPD to include Hodel, a physician specializing in public health (not a surgeon), among its many suspects in the Dahlia case. Authorities put Hodel under surveillance from Feb. 18 to March 27, 1950 to ascertain whether he was implicated in the murder. In the final report to the grand jury dated Feb. 20, 1951, Lt. Frank Jemison of the Los Angeles County district attorney's office wrote:

Doctor George Hodel, M.D., 5121 Fountain Ave., at the time of this murder had a clinic at East 1st Street near Alameda. Lillian Lenorak [note: a mental patient later confined to the state hospital at Camarillo] who lived with this doctor said he spent some time around the Biltmore Hotel and identified the photo of victim Short as a photo of one of the doctor's girlfriends. Tamara Hodel, 15-year-old daughter, stated that her mother, Dorothy Hodel, had told her that her father had been out all night on a party the night of this murder and said: "They'll never be able to prove I did that murder." Two microphones were placed in this suspect's home[5] (see the logs and recordings made over approximately three weeks' time which tend to prove his innocence. See statement of Dorothy Hodel, former wife[6]). Informant Lillian Lenorak has been committed to the State Mental Institution at Camarillo. Joe Barrett, a roomer at the Hodel residence cooperated as an informant. A photograph of the suspect in the nude with a nude identified colored model was secured from his personal effects. Undersigned identified this model as Mattie Comfort 3423 1/2 S. Arlington, RE public 4953. She said that she was with Doctor Hodel sometime prior to the murder and that she knew nothing about his being associated with victim. Rudolph Walters, known to have been acquainted with victim and also with suspect Hodel claimed that he had not seen victim in the presence of Hodel and did not believe that the doctor had ever met the victim. The following acquaintances of Hodel were questioned and none were able to connect this suspect with this murder--Fred Sexton, 1020 White Knoll Drive; Nita Moladoro, 1617 1/2 N. Normandie; Ellen Taylor, 5121 Fountain Ave.; Finley Thomas, 616 1/2 S. Normandie; Mildred B. Colby, 4629 Vista Del Monte St., Sherman Oaks, this witness was a girlfriend of Charles Smith, abortionist friend of Hodel; Tarin Gilkey, 1025 N. Wilcox; Irene Summerset, 1236 1/4 N. Edgmont; Norman Beckett, 1025 N. Wilcox; Ethel Kane, 1033 N. Wilcox; Annette Chase, 1039 N. Wkilcox; Dorothy Royer, 1636 N. Beverly Glenn. See supplemental reports, long sheets and hear recordings, all of which tend to eliminate this suspect.

This DA report was submitted at the completion of the DA's investigation of George Hodel and at least 21 other suspects.

In 2003, George Hodel's son, former LAPD Homicide Detective Steve Hodel, published a book claiming his father, who died in 1999, had in fact committed the Black Dahlia murder as well as a host of unsolved murders over the better part of two decades. Steve Hodel says he came up with the idea when he saw two pictures in his dead father's photo album that he claims resemble Short, although Short's family insists they are not of her and many other observers have failed to see the resemblance.[7]. Steve Hodel claims he was unaware at the time that his father had been a suspect in the case, although his sister Tamar was friends with Daddy Was the Black Dahlia Killer author Janice Knowlton and case documents make it clear that his parents and many of their associates knew the senior Hodel was a suspect. After reviewing the information presented in Steve Hodel's book, Head Deputy D.A. Stephen Kay (Manson Family prosecutor) proclaimed the case "solved," but others have noted that Kay, who has since retired, formed this conclusion by treating Steve Hodel's many disputed assertions as established fact. Detective Brian Carr, the LAPD officer currently in charge of the Black Dahlia case, said in a televised interview that he was baffled by Kay's response, adding that if he ever took a case as weak as Steve Hodel's to a prosecutor he would be "laughed out of the office". Author James Ellroy endorsed Steve Hodel's theory in the foreword to the paperback version of Hodel's book.[8]

George Knowlton: Little reliable information is available on George Knowlton, except that he lived in the Los Angeles area at the time of the Black Dahlia murder and died in an automobile accident in 1962. In the early 1990s, George Knowlton's daughter, Janice Knowlton, began claiming that she had witnessed her father murdering Elizabeth Short, a claim she based largely on "recovered memories" that surfaced during psychological therapy. The Los Angeles Times said in 1991:

Los Angeles Police Detective John P. St. John, one of the investigators who had been assigned to the case, said he has talked to Knowlton and does not believe there is a connection between the Black Dahlia murder and her father. "We have a lot of people offering up their fathers and various relatives as the Black Dahlia killer," said St. John, better known as Jigsaw John. "The things that she is saying are not consistent with the facts of the case."

But the Westminster Police Department took her claims seriously enough to dig up the grounds around Ms. Knowlton's childhood home, looking for evidence. They found nothing to tie George Knowlton to the crime. In 1995, Ms. Knowlton created a sub-genre as the first person to publish a book claiming that his or her own father committed the Black Dahlia murder. The book was written with veteran crime writer Michael Newton. In the book Ms. Knowlton, a former professional singer and owner of a public relations company, alleged that her father had been having an affair with Elizabeth Short and that Short was staying in a makeshift bedroom in their garage, where she suffered a miscarriage. Ms. Knowlton said she was later forced to accompany her father when he disposed of the body.[9]. Ms. Knowlton claimed that a former member of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department told her that George Knowlton was considered a suspect in the case by that agency, but this claim is unsupported by public documents that have since been released in the case. She claimed the same source told her that future LAPD chief and California politician Ed Davis and Los Angeles County District Attorney Buron Fitts were suspects in the murder as well. Janice Knowlton died of an overdose of prescription drugs in 2004, in what was deemed a suicide by the Orange County, CA, coroner's office.

In a curious side note to her accusations against her father, Ms. Knowlton, who was a frequent contributor as jgk61 to various online forums where the Black Dahlia case was discussed, posted this article to a Usenet group in August 1998, in which she names Dr. George Hodel as a suspect in the case. George Hodel was the father of Steve Hodel, who published a book in 2003 naming his father as the killer. Ms. Knowlton's sister has since stated on amazon.com's web page for her sister's book, Daddy Was the Black Dahlia Killer, that after publication of Ms. Knowlton's book, Tamar Hodel, daughter of George Hodel and sister of Steve Hodel, contacted Ms. Knowlton and the two women remained "email pals for several years".

Ms. Knowlton also made claims prefiguring those of Black Dahlia Files author Donald Wolfe. In 1999, she claimed in various public fora that Norman Chandler participated in a cover-up of the murder. Ms. Knowlton claimed that on Halloween 1946 she was sold as a child prostitute to a Pasadena devil-worshiping sex cult at the age of 9 (Daddy Was the Black Dahlia Killer, Page 128). She frequently alleged that she was sold as a child prostitute to a long list of dead movie stars and other notables, including Norman Chandler, Gene Autry (whose name she continually misspelled as Autrey), Arthur Freed and Walt Disney. Knowlton became so abusive in her Usenet posts that Pacbell canceled her account in 1999.

Robert M. "Red" Manley: The last person seen with Elizabeth Short before her disappearance, Manley was the LAPD's top suspect in the first few days after killing. After two polygraph tests and a sworn alibi, Manley was set free.[10] He also identified Short's handbag purse and one of her shoes after they were discovered in a dumpster on January 25, 1947, several miles from the murder scene.[11] Manley, who had been discharged from the army due to mental disability, subsequently suffered a series of mental breakdowns resulting in his being committed to Patton State Hospital by his wife in 1954 after claiming to be hearing voices. He died on January 9, 1986.[12]

Orson Welles: In her 1999 book, Mary Pacios, a former neighbor of the Short family in Medford, MA, suggested filmmaker Orson Welles as a suspect.[13] Pacios bases this theory on such factors as Welles' volatile temperament and his obsession with cutting-in-half as indicated by the visual clues Pacios claims can be found in the crazy house set he designed for scenes that were later deleted from a film Welles was making around the time of the murder. Pacios also cites the magic act Welles performed to entertain soldiers during WW II. She believes that the bi-section of the body was part of the killer's signature and an acting out of the perpetrator's obsession. Welles applied for his passport on January 24, 1947 the same date the killer mailed a packet to Los Angeles newspapers. Welles left the country for an extended stay in Europe ten months after the murder. According to Pacios, witnesses she has interviewed say that both Welles and the victim frequented Brittingham's restaurant in Los Angeles during the same time period. Welles was never a suspect in the original investigation. Pacios now maintains a web site containing a great deal of information and official documents about the Black Dahlia case, but only a short section on Welles' supposed involvement. [14]

Jack Anderson Wilson (also known as Arnold Smith): Wilson was a life-long petty criminal and alcoholic who was interviewed by author John Gilmore while Gilmore was researching his book Severed. After Wilson's death, Gilmore named Wilson as a suspect due to his alleged acquaintance with Short. Prior to Wilson's death, however, Gilmore made an entirely different claim to the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner in a story appearing Jan. 17, 1982. While Severed says that homicide Detective John St. John was about to "close in" on Wilson based on the material Gilmore provided, St. John told the Herald-Examiner in the same article that he was busy with other killings and would review Gilmore's claims when he got time. As reliable sources of information about the case, such as the FBI files and portions of the Los Angeles district attorney files, have become publicly available, statements about Short and the murder attributed to Wilson in Severed and supposedly tying him to the crime have not been borne out as accurate. Severed also claims Wilson was involved in the murder of Georgette Bauerdorf.[15] Severed, and many other sources based on Severed, erroneously claim that Short and Bauerdorf knew each other in Los Angeles, supposedly because they were both hostesses at the same nightclub. In reality, by the time Short arrived in Los Angeles in 1946, Bauerdorf had been dead for two years and the nightclub had been closed for a year.

Some crime authors have speculated on a link between the Short murder and the Cleveland Torso Murders, also known as the Kingsbury Run Murders, which took place in Cleveland between 1934 and 1938.[16]. The original LAPD investigators examined this case in 1947 and discounted any relationship between the two, as they did with a large number of killings that occurred before and afterward, well into the 1950s.

Other crime authors have suggested a linkage between the Short murder and the 1945 murder of 6-year-old Suzanne Degnan in Chicago, who was also dismembered (and Short's body was discovered near Degnan Boulevard in Los Angeles). However, the so-called "Lipstick Killer" William Heirens confessed to the Degnan murder and was in jail when Short's body was discovered, although some have contended that Heirens was innocent of the Degnan murder.[17]

Author James Ellroy, who wrote a fictionalized account of the murder, has publicly endorsed at least two mutually exclusive solutions to the crime. Whenever confronted with this seeming contradiction at public appearances or by TV interviewers, Ellroy now refuses to discuss theories about the case. He now says the case is unsolved.

Books, films and other media

A 1975 TV movie about the case, Who Is the Black Dahlia by Robert Lenski and starring Lucie Arnaz is a highly fictionalized version of the murder. Many details were changed because several people, including Short's mother and Red Manley, who brought Short from San Diego to Los Angeles, refused to sign releases for the studio.

John Gregory Dunne used the murder as a point of departure in his 1977 novel True Confessions, which was made into the 1981 film True Confessions starring Robert Duvall and Robert De Niro with a screenplay by Dunne and his wife, Joan Didion.

Neo-noir author James Ellroy based his 1987 book, The Black Dahlia on the crime. A film by Brian De Palma, based on the Ellroy novel, began production in Bulgaria in May 2005. Also titled The Black Dahlia, the movie will star Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank, and Mia Kirshner as Elizabeth Short, and is planned for release in 2006.

A 1988 episode of the TV detective thriller Hunter depicts Rick Hunter and Dee Dee McCall discovering a case similar to the Black Dahlia murder when a skeleton that has been cut in half is found during demolition of a building constructed in 1947. Hunter and McCall are joined by a retired detective who worked on the Elizabeth Short case. The murderer in the recent case turns out to be Short's murderer as well. (A disclaimer at the end of the episode explains that the Black Dahlia case remains open and unsolved on the books of the Los Angeles Police Department.)

Take 2 Interactive published the computer game, Black Dahlia, in 1998. The puzzle-based adventure game tied Elizabeth Short's murder to Nazis and occult rituals which the player had to investigate. The game features Dennis Hopper, whose son-in-law was one of the company's owners, and Teri Garr. It also ties the murder to the infamous Cleveland Torso Murderer, though the torso murders' case was altered to fit into the storyline.

Max Allan Collins combined the Black Dahlia and Cleveland Torso Murder in his Shamus Award-winning 2002 novel, Angel in Black, featuring his character, private investigator Nathan Heller.

In 2002, rock star and artist Marilyn Manson created a series of water color paintings based upon the murder.

Bob Belden's 2001 CD Black Dahlia draws inspiration from the case for a moody, noir score divided into 12 sections depicting her life, on a par with Jerry Goldsmith's score for Chinatown and David Shire's music for the film Farewell, My Lovely.

Musician Lisa Marr also mentions the Black Dahlia in her song "In California" from the album 4 AM. This song was later covered by her former Cub bandmate Neko Case.

The band The Black Dahlia Murder take their name from this infamous murder.

Lamb of God (band) featured a song entitled The Black Dahlia on their album New American Gospel.

The lead singer of The Dwarves uses the stage name "Blag Dahlia," likely named for The Black Dahlia.

William Randolph Fowler, a reporter at the scene of the crime, included the Black Dahlia case in his 1991 autobiography, "Reporters: Memoirs of a Young Newspaperman."

I read a book called "Severed: The true story of the Black Dahlia Murder" which was very informative. Even down to the account of how they found her body (cut in half, triangle cut out on her thigh, one of her breast cut out, her mouth slit to look like a huge joker type grin) and the exact location in Los Angeles, CA (back then, a park or grassy area where the streets came together and formed a "V". When looking at it from a map, it looks like a woman's pubic area). It accounts who she was with around that time, where she hung out at in Downtown Los Angeles (many of those buildings still there). and what kind of person (her personality) she was. The book was very good. I'm sure there are others though.

Her real name was Elizabeth Short. She was living in Los Angles when she was murdered. She was a dancer in clubs, dabbled in acting, was a waitress, and periodically unemployed. She knew some very seedy characters. She also knew some people she probably shouldn't have.

No one knows where she was murdered as her body was removed and taken to the spot it was found.

Her throat was slit, but she had been burned and tortured before she died. Her body was descrated, deliberately. She is buried in Los Angles and her killer has never been named. Lots of specuation though
