The Black Dahlia was the nickname given to an actress named Elizabeth Short. She was killed in 1947. Her body was found in a vacant lot, severly mutilated and severed in half at the waist. It was a big deal in those days and there are many versions of how she got the name Black Dahlia, but that's what they called it, the Black Dahlia murder. It was never solved and the movie is about the investigation.
