How to prepare dahlia bulbs for winter?

Place the tubers upside down in a dry airy space for about two weeks. This allows moisture to drain out of stems. The tubers need to be completely dry before they are stored for the winter. Next store the tubers in trays of dry sand or peat moss in a cool, dry cellar or storage area at about 40 to 45 degrees F. Never store at a much higher temperature, as dahlia tubers will dry out and shrivel rapidly.

Another method of storing includes placing tubers in a heavy-grade, black plastic bag without additional packing material. Then seal the bag. This will prevent the tubers from dehydrating. Keep the tubers in a frost-free area. The danger exists, however, that they will sweat and rot.

Inspect the tubers every few weeks during the winter to check for disease or shriveling. Cut off any diseased parts and, if the tubers have shriveled, place them in a bucket of water overnight to plump them up. Allow them to dry thoroughly before returning them to storage.

How to prepare dahlia bulbs for winter?
For the dahlias in the ground I just cut off the tops, dry thoroughly, and toss in a paper bag and put in a crawl space under the kitchen, it's dark and cool. But... I also have dahlia in planters and just let them dry completely after cutting them back and set the whole planter in the crawl space. In the spring I just water and feed the planter and set the tubers in the ground. I also do the same with my tuberous begonias that are in planters. Works like a dream.
Reply:Cut off the stems. Dig them up, hose them off, allow them to dry for a couple of days. Put a layer of peat moss in a box, add the tubers, cover with more peat moss. Store in a cool dry place such as a garage. Keep barely moist until you're ready to put them back in the ground (early spring, but after danger of hard freeze is past).
Reply:After they start to turn yellow and die back, dig carefully and cut off the tops leaving a short stem. Wash well and put through a rinse of water with a small amount of bleach to kill any residual peests. Dry thoroughly inside (garage floor) and store in boxes filled with saw dust. I cut mine apart before storing, but you must be very careful to include an eye in each tuber. Here in the milder coastal zones of the west I do this about November.
Reply:The bulbs have to be stored in a paper bag %26amp; stored in a dark place that isn't cold
