Will annual dahlia tubers over winter to be planted in spring?

Here in PA we are supposed to dig up our dahlia tubers because they will not over winter. However, I got lazy last fall and left them in. I did get fortunate because we had an extremely mild winter and my dahlia's came up this spring.

If you live in a climate that does not freeze in winter, they will probably survive. Where it's cold (in the North), they will die. You should dig them up and replant in the Spring, but an even easier way to propagate dahlias is to let the flowers go to seed in the fall, pick the heads, let them dry thoroughly. Then in the Spring you will have dozens of flowers from one seed head, whereas from a tuber, you get one flower next year. We stopped saving tubers years ago and now we have hundreds of beautiful dahlias each season.... free!
Reply:It depends upon where you live. In some parts of the country, dahlias can be overwintered in the soil; other areas require them to be dug up and stored until the following year. Annual means once per year though. The life cycle is only good for one year. You are getting some terms mixed up.

The big question is where are you from? Dahlias are hardy in Zone 7b but further north they should be dug up %26amp; stored in a cool, dry location. If I were you I would take a peek at a gardening zone map to figure where your location rates. I unfortunately, will be digging my tubers up tomorrow.
Reply:I have found that I lose some to rot if they overwinter in wet heavy soil. I take mine up even though I am in USDA zone 9.
Reply:It depends on where you live. Here in Michigan we dig our dahlia bulbs as they will not overwinter.
