Have you read James Ellroy's LA quartet:The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, LA Confidential, White Jazz? Great?

The four books are all about the bad men who ran The Los Angles Police Dept in the 50's. They are great as police procedurals, wonderful poetic prose. The Black Dahlia is a true case:LA's longest unsolved murder case; the other three follow the basic same themes; 3 good/bad men up against a system that they are struggling to control but in which they increasingly become more and more mired. They are violent but not in a gratuitous manner; a rough kind of justice is served, but those who live by the sword in Ellroy's world die so.

Yeah, Ellroy is pretty great isn't he? I read them a long time ago and sort of forgot about them, thanks for reminding me.

Have you read Clockers, by Richard Price? That's another fantastic book.
